Shalu-umapathy-portrait

With experience in global health and the private sector, Shalu Umapathy comes to IDEO.org with a background in international development and business strategy.

From healthcare to microfinance to mobile technology, she has applied her life’s work to finding viable, scalable ways to deliver solutions that benefit low-income communities.

Shalu comes to IDEO.org from Abt Associates where she leveraged a private sector business design background to support global health projects. She most recently co-authored a tool to measure the sustainability of health organizations and designed a challenge fund to spur innovation in East Africa.

Shalu also has extensive experience in the private for-profit world, including strategy consulting at Bain & Company where she supported Fortune 500 businesses, and Digitas, where she used analytics to improve her clients’ marketing programs. She was a Clinton Fellow in India and has an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Shalu has a fabulous husband, Subu, and a feisty son, Mokshay. They enjoy exchanging strange animal noises in their free time.
