19 months ago IDEO.org teamed up with a group of social entrepreneurs who had a singular purpose: to design medical devices that were affordable enough for low-income communities around the world.

Together Evotech and IDEO.org redesigned a low-cost portable endoscope made from off-the shelf parts with a cost of about $250, or 20 times less than equivalent products in the field.

Today we are proud to announce the EvoCam design is being used in 60 clinical settings in Uganda and India and recently won a prestigious IDSA IDEA design award. It was also named one of five tech trends driving medical devices forward.

Read all about it in this Wired magazine article:

“Using expertise gained on projects for multi-billion dollar clients, the IDEO.org designers and mechanical engineers were able to combine functionality from different parts, like using a portion of the housing as a heat sink, which allowed them to reduce cost while improving performance.”

“Of all the branches of industrial design that one could pursue, the design of medical devices is arguably the most important to society – and the least sexy-sounding…. Our hats off to Evotech and IDEO.org who are, collectively, the sexy librarian that just took her glasses off and shook her hair out.”
